Research Summary
Finding each of the components to complete my research was not incredibly difficult. My background of having completed research in the field of psychology was extremely helpful in my discerning acceptable sources from inadequate ones. Because of extensive research already done on this topic, I was able to find substantial information regarding each research question that provided satisfactory information in answering these questions. The one area of information that I wish I could have found more on was the effectiveness of anxiety treatments and coping skills within a large randomized group of test subjects. I do understand the issues with my desired findings though as the effectiveness of coping skills vary from person to person and situation to situation. Also, factors in the effectiveness of coping skills are the amount of practice and the trial and error of finding and utilizing other methods.
As I previously alluded to, the hardest part of this research assignment was narrowing down information to a more broad sample of subjects rather than including subjects with specific additional issues such as learning disabilities or problems with physical health. Due to the nature of my topic there was a lot of research that was directed in experimentation regarding a lot of variables that I did not want to include. I did not want “specifics” in my paper because my goal was to introduce simply a broad overview of the topic. My concept map did not change much because of the “larger-scale” essence of my paper but my research methods did force me to somehow narrow my broad topic to exclude the additional variables that so many sources offered. As a result of this change in research methods, I was steered away from many journals and experimental research and instead towards articles similar to my own goal product provided by professionals in the field of mental health that encompassed the basic information that is easily understood by the general public. These articles as well as my own are for the purpose of providing such information in order to spread such knowledge to as many people as possible with the goal of teaching people to be able to identify and understand the symptoms of anxiety, address the issue of anxiety, provide support for the anxious, and even assist the victim with coping skills and identify other methods of treatment.
